Devereaux (second from left), Commander, 100th Air Refueling Wing (ARW). When a new softball field was planned, Mr. Tester and his colleagues were called in to survey an area first and they discovered the artifacts. This body was not only the only find that the archaeologists found, there were several other remains, pottery, and coins. The dates for most of the finds are believed to be from the early Roman age, 43 - 410 C.E. (Common Era)), but some items could fall into the Neolithic...

Baltimore, MD. Statistical data of great value in the future will accumulate in the files of the Social Security Board Records Office. To provide easy means of developing and studying this information, without disturbing the permanent records, acturial cards are reproduced from the original employee master cards. The master card is a [...] salmon pink. The acturial card is a bright green. They are of different colors so they will not be mixed together inadvertently. The photograph above shows a reproducing machine making acturial cards from master cards. The punched master card is placed in one compartment. A blank acturial card is placed in another. When the master card has been automatically carried to the proper position it stops, momentarilly. Meanwhile the blank acturial card is carried to another place in the machine. Electrical impulses cause the machine to punch on the acturial card the same holes, in the same position, as on the master card. The two cards are held in place while the part of the machine holding the acturial card telegraphs back to the part holding the master card to see that the punches in each are identical. Then the cards are released, one is in one pile and the other in another. The whole operation requires a small fraction of a minute

Says airbase necessary at Guam. Washington, D.C., Jan. 25. Chief of Naval Operation Admiral William D. Agricultural day laborer wiping the sweat from his neck after his return home from chopping cotton. This man had once been a tenant farmer and had quit farming because of repeated crop failures and inability to secure good farming land; he then became a day laborer, his entire family working with him in the fields. They chopped cotton, hoed corn, picked cotton, cut spinach and picked up potatoes. However, because they had this established tent home on the banks of the Arkansas River and because they worked in and around this neighborhood, they considered themselves a class above the migrant workers who came in to harvest the crops. This man had planted a small garden back of his tent not for the value of the garden since he said that the sun would get it before the vegetables were mature, but because it would prevent any of the migrant families from camping near them. He said, "Those migrants don't live the way we do, course they don't have anything to live with." Near Webbers Falls, Oklahoma

New process expected to revolutionize map making. Washington, D.C., March 21. A new machine just designed and perfected by John Braund, Cartographer for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, by which relief maps can be made showing all the details of topography in a form true to nature, is expected to revolutionize map making. Instead of compressed paper or cardboard, Braund uses a thin metal on which he prints the map, and, then hammers out the topography with a specially-designed electric hammer. Maps made by this process can be quickly understood and accurately read by even the untrained map reader. Braund said the new machine would be of untold value to armies in field in war time. 3-21-39

Housing for lumber workers in the Tillamook County, Oretgon. In August of 1933 a forest fire in one week swept through 290,000 acres of woodland. This area is now being cleared and most of the partially burned trees are of commerical value. The future (after clearing is completed) is undecided--some factions desire reforestation; others believe that it can be adopted to some form of agriculture, probably cattle and sheep and goat raising
