Steam Turbines with Special Reference to tbVDe Laval Type of Turbine* BY KONRAD ANDERSON The present construction of the De Laval Turbine is founded onthe action principle. The steam is blown from stationary nozzlesagainst vanes or buckets fixed in the circumference of a wheel, and the stem thus impinging on the vanes drives the wheelround. There is only one row of buckets on the wheel, thesteam in passing this row delivers most of its energy and isafterwards exhausted either to the atmosphere or to a condenserin the ordinary way. The principle of the machine is verysimilar to the action turbine for water as constructed by Girard. As is the case with all action turbines, the working of the machinedepends on the kinetic energy of the medium which drives it, andthe higher the kinetic energy the more power is obtained. Itis therefore important that the driving medium, which in this c
