STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 123 out that in certain parts of Lancashire, of which Salford isone, coal is delivered in hoxes, each carrying about 2 tons.These boxes fit into barges, and are lifted by a crane.They are fitted with collapsible bottoms, thus enabling thecoal to be tipped direct into the bunkers. Shoots con-nect the hopper on each mechanical stoker direct with thebunkers, and each shoot is fitted with a recording appara-tus for measuring the coal delivered into each hopper. Thestorage capacity of the bunkers over the boilers is about1600 tons.
