The four generators at present installed were supplied bythe British Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Com-pany, Ltd. They each have an output of 300 kw, and arecapable of withstanding overloads of 25 per cent for two cal stokers, etc., when raising steam in the boilers previousto starting up the plant. It is also used for running anyspecially early cars or repair cars for night work on theoverhead equipment. The motor-generator was supplied byBruce, Peebles & Co., of Edinburgh, and consists of twogenerators coupled together with a flywheel weighing oneton between, and mounted on a common bedplate. The

The reason for thedouble-wound armature on thisside of the apparatus is to get themaximum output of the machineand to run the set at a constantspeed. To enable the low-tension side togenerate an output of 600 amps.,at 140 volts or 84 k\v, the high-tension side requires an output of100 kw, at 500 volts running at500 r. p. m. With double-woundarmature and a pressure of 100volts supplied to the low-pressureside of the two armatures in paral-lel the set is driven from the bat-tery at a speed of 600 r. p. m., andthe high-tension side generates itsfull output of 170 amps, at 500volts or approximately 84 kw.The motor-generator can by thisarrangement always be worked atits highest efficiency without anyweakening of the fields except thesmall amount necessary to reducethe voltage on the low-tensionside, as a dynamo, from 140-100volts.
