l are made ofaluminum. The Excelsior truck, a recent production of the company, wasexamined by the delegates as a type well calculated to withstand thehard service on electric roads. Applied to the truck was the effectiveWood & Fowler track brake, which is manufactured solely by the Peck-ham Company. In the construction of the truck spring-cushioned gearis employed, by means of which the track and rail joints are largely savedfrom the hammer blow that the rigid mass of the truck would otherwiseimpart to them. The cantilever extensions are very powerfully bracedand afford a substantial support to the car body, especially when theroadbed is in such condition that the body is inclined with less adequatesupports to rock. A substantial life guard was attached to the truck.The truck is constructed with hot rivets and is machine fitted throughout,and it has been adopted as standard on a member of railways in differ-ent parts of the country. 286 ELECTRIC RAILWAY GAZETTE.
