Three Pullmansof sleeping passengers, besides the packed daycoaches, are saved from a death-dealing col-lision. That brakeman was trained to obey. Heknew his duty and did it. Is any soldier uponEuropes firing line, officer or man, doing more?Only a railway private, but a hero. And itstrue, every word of this tale.

Japans Candy Etiquette BUT with all that, they have their nicetiesabout eating. One day as I w^as goingalong the street I saw a candy man sittingon a stool beside his cart fashioning delicacieswith his two flying thumbs. Taking a ball ofcandy mixture he would give it a few pinches, atwist, dab on a red spot and there would be afish. Taking up another bdl he would give it afew twists and he would have a radish. Half adozen of these he would put into a thumb-madecandy plate, the size of a chocolate wrapper,and sell for half a cent. Buying a plate of tinydelicacies I gave it to a girl expecting to seeher down it in good old American fashion, butinstead of falling on it greedily she made acourtly bow and tore down the street as fast as her wooden shoeswould let her. Ilooked after herin astonishment,thinking thatthis upset everychild theory Ihad, and deter-mined to try itagain. So Iwaited until thetwo flyingthumbs hadmolded anotherdelicacy andproffered this toa second child.Down the street
