No. 3 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MACAZINE ,57 e» # yn. 2 During the last few years southernIHinois has come under the notice ofeastern apple growers, some of whomhave leased orchards or bought themoutright. After seeing the result ofgiving these orchards proper attentionfor a time, these men have become con-vinced that in southern Illinois both climate and soil are peculiarly adaptedto the growing of apples. The pictureson this and the opposite page, reading insuccession, Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, form apanorama of one of our largest and bestorchards, and give a good idea of theproperties of some of the individualowners, and the extent of the industry.

No. i 58 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE A farmer living along the line of theBaltimore and Ohio owned an orchard ofsome forty or sixty acres. After severalcrop failures he decided to have theground cleared, and tried to get some oneto cut down the trees for the sake ofthe wood. Apple tree butts are atough proposition when the kitchen firegets low, and no one seemed over anxiousto tackle the job. Just then an Easternapple grower happened along and leasedthe orchard at thq rate of five dollars anacre. After two years of proper culti- one hundred barrels of barrel stock to theacre, at an average value of $3.00 abarrel. The bulk and cider stock shoulddefray the expense of picking and bar-reling. In Illinois, orchards can be bought atan average price of $100 an acre, whichis very low when compared with pricesin other states. If these orchards re-ceived the same careful attention as dothose of Oregon and the northwest, much larger production and much higherquality would result. KAL
