Model of the 40-gun East Indiaman Vergelijking
Amsterdam, 1780
wood, brass, iron, glass, rope, leather
The administrators of the Naval Models Room not only commissioned new models, but also ‘improved’ existing ones. During the 19th century this model of an 18th-
century East Indiaman was fitted with an emergency foremast and lightning conductors by J.P. Asmus. The Dutch East India Company had no ship called Vergelijking (Comparison) in its service. The name suggests that the model may have been intended to illustrate new ship-building techniques.

Comparison of Baptisimal Record and Age Certificate of Stanley Letuvinak (American name, Thomas Long). Born according to baptismal record May 10, 1897; date of birth given in age certificate was June 10, 1893, in order to make him 14 years of age. He was killed by falling from a breaker at Wanamie, Pa., when only 10 years of age. The Coroner's Jury, said in its report, "We find said company not responsible for the accident as they held affidavit from his father that he was 14 and the boy was away from his work when the accident occurred." (See also notes from Coroner's Docket, 1910 report of L.W. Hine.) Location: [Pennsylvania]

He and a boy of 15 are working in the Century Cotton Mill, South Boston, Virginia The girl on the ground does not work now, but said she was 12 years old (which she would not likely have done if she were in the mill). These children who are not working make a good means of comparison for ages of those that are working. Family has lived here four years. Before that, they lived in a Virginia farm. Both have been cleaning in Kilburn Mill for 2 years, in #1 spinning room. Both from "the Islands" a few years ago. Antone is very illiterate, spoke almost no English, could hardly write his name. I asked the tallest boy how Antone could be in the mill. He said they lie about their ages. If I came from the Islands, I could fool them about my age too and go in the mill. He said the priests fixed it up. Location: New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The cylindrical projections of Jupiter, representing both Voyager 1 (top) and Voyager 2 (bottom), are presented in this comparison. The top picture extends 400 degrees longitude to 0 degrees (right edge). It is aligned with the lower image so that the longitude scale is correct for both frames. The comparison between the pictures shows the relative motions of features in Jupiter's atmosphere. It can be seen that the Great Red Spot has moved westward and the white oval features eastward during the time between the acquisition of these pictures. Regulare plume patterns are equidistant around the northern edge of the equator, while a train of small spots has moved eastward at approxiamately 80 degrees south latitude. In addition to these relative motions, significant changes are evident in the recirculation flow east of the Great Red Spot, in the disturbed region west of the Greast Red Spot, and as seen in the brightening of material spreading into the equatorial region from the more southerly latitudes. This image shows a comparison between a Magellan image (right) and the highest resolution Earth-based radar image of Venus, obtained by the US National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center's Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The small white bot in the Arecibo image on the left corresponds to the Magellan image. This portion of a Magellan radar image strip shows a small region on the east flank of a major volcanic upland called Beta Regio. The image is centered a t 23 degrees north latitude and 286.7 degrees east longitude. The ridge and valley network in the middle part of the image is formed by intersecting faults which have broken the Venusian crust into a complex deformed type of surface called tessera, the Latin word for tile. The parallel mountains and valleys resemble the Basin and Range Province kn the western United States. The irregular dark patch near the top of the image is a smooth surface, proboably formed by lava flows in a region about 10 km (6 mi.) across. Similar dark surfaces within the valleys indicate lava flows that are younger than the tessera. The Arecibo image contains probable impact craters, mapped in detail by Magellan. The Magellan image has a resolution of 120 meters, (400 feet). The image segment is 20 km (12.4 mi.) wide adn 150 km (90 mi.) long. The Arecibo image has a resolution of 1-3 km (0.6-1.8 mi.) and is approx. 900 km (550 mi.) across. ARC-1990-A90-3002
