This was either worked in colom-edsilks, like ordinary Satin Stitch embroideries, in Englishwool in Satin Stitch, or in black silk like the EtchingEmbroideries. To work: Draw upon close canvas a land-scape with figui-es, paint upon silk, in water colours, face,hands, and feet of figures, and Applique that to thecanvas. Work the drapery and chief parts of the landscapein Satin Stitch, the leaves of trees in French Knots,and shrubs and bushes in Bullion Knots. Lapel, or Lappell.—A term signifying the lapped, orturned-over corner of the breast of a coat or bodice, socut and folded back when an open front is desired. Lappa.—A silk brocade manufactured in India. Lappet, or-;Tab.—The lace pendants of a womanshead-dress, as worn in the eighteenth century.
