War-Service Activities in the Schools Aside from these methods of instruction, the schools areparticipating in the characteristic war-service activitieswhich are being carried on in the community at large. Underthis head are being done such things as the knitting ofvarious garments requested by the Red Cross, the makingof Christmas gifts for French and Belgian children, con-tributions to the Red Cross Society of money earned bypupils in various ways, the adoption of war orphans, buyingand selling of Liberty Bonds, starting of war-savings ac-counts, obtaining signatures to food pledge cards, etc. Theamount of this sort of work accomplished by pupils is re-markable, and a complete list of these activities would show

Junior Red Cross A plan for organizing these war-service activities hasjust been announced by the American Red Cross Society.This plan contemplates the organizing of a school as anauxiliary to the Red Cross and an opportunity is given towork under the immediate guidance of this great organiza-tion. A manual of school activities of the Junior Red Crossis being prepared by trained vocational teachers so that thedirections will be explicit and the work will be adapted tothe abilities of the children. Thrift Stamps Participation in the war-savings plan of the governmentby the purchase of thrift stamps and the organization ofthrift clubs is especially successful among school children.This work is so organized that every school building has anauthorized agent for the selling of thrift stamps and everypupil is encouraged to start an account and to accumulateall the savings poss
