On the cover: The small teakattle pictured was recovered in the early 1960s by Dr. E. W. Davis and divers Donald Franklin and Curtis Anderson from a small rapids between Gunflint and Little Guntflint lakes. It is very similar to one portrayed by artist Frances Ann Hopkins (1838-1918) in her view of a North canoe passing along high rocky cliffs. Mrs Hopkins often accompanied her husband, secretary to the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, on such canoe journeys through the North American wilderness which she then depicted with beauty and accuracy. The teacattle is owned by the Minnessota Historical Society; the painting is reproduced with permission of the Public Archives of Canada, Ottawa.
