Virgin and Child, sculpture collection Rijksmuseum
Summary
Although Christ’s head is missing, this elegant statue is one of the Rijkmuseum’s most important ivories. It is a rare example of the earliest phase of Gothic ivory carving in France, directly influenced by the large sculptures on cathedrals in and around Paris. The Virgin’s silver crown has disappeared.
