A couple of hours later we were sitting in the coolcorridor sipping our coffee in the most approved civil-ised fashion, watching the movements of visitors, andcatching now and then a glint of local colour in theshape of picturesquely-dressed native waiters, an im-pudent little Jew guide in Tunisian costume, and theamply dressed and portly form of his Moorish com-panion. But we did not feel contented. What came we outfor to see ? we asked each other. Not this certainly.We felt we could not possibly sleep that night inpeace unless we had sought out some adventure orseen something thoroughly Moorish to dream about. We soon learned that tlie lantern was an importantadjunct to niglit-raniLles in a ^Moorish town, lesseningthe risk of unpleasant shocks to head or feet, or un-wished-for contact with disagreeable sewage-scentedpuddles and dead dogs and cats. These, however, inour fresh enthusiasm, were considered so thoroughlyEastern and in harmony with things Moorish, that weraised not our voices against them. Indeed, I verilybelieve we should have complained had we found thestreets thoroughly clean, and had not occasionallystumbled against some malodorous dead animal.
