Ferdinand Justi (1837-1907) was a German art historian and museum director. He is known for his significant contributions to the field of art history, particularly in the study of Italian Renaissance art. Justi was born in Leipzig on 27 June 1837. He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin, specialising in art history and classical archaeology. He received his doctorate in 1859. One of Ferdinand Justi's most notable works is his biography of the Italian Renaissance painter Giorgione, entitled 'Giorgione: Tragödie eines Künstlers', published in 1879. The book is considered a pioneering work in the field of art historical biography and reflects Justi's thorough research and scholarship. In addition to his scholarly work, Justi held a number of administrative and managerial positions in the arts and culture. He worked at the Dresden Gallery and was Director of the Royal Museums in Berlin from 1886 to 1907. Ferdinand Justi died in Berlin on 7 April 1907, leaving behind a legacy of contributions to the understanding and appreciation of art, particularly in the context of the Italian Renaissance.
