o the city has not been made liy way of therapids, a pleasing trip will be by rail to Lachine, returning thencethrough the rapids, in the market steamer, which makes its daily morn-ing trips to the city. St. Helens Island, directly opposite the city, i.s abeautiful resort, and a portion of it has been set aside as a public park.It is easily reached by ferry, and is therefore the favorite resort of themasses on holidays. Athletic games and sports, picnics and varioussociety celebrations, serve to render it a lively place during the summerseason, and the visitor will seldom fail to find opportunities of enjoy-ment at any time. Swimming baths, belonging to the Montreal Swim-ming Club, are located on its southeastern shore, and the remnants ofdeparted military glory in the shape of a dismantled battery, someancient blockhouses and barracks, and a graveyard, are reminders ofthe fact that it was once occupied as a point of considerable importance,conmianding the approach to Montreal Harbor.
