The Tar and the Jordan! (BM 1868,0808.6131)

description

Summary

The Duke of Clarence runs (right to left) along a street, one cracked chamber-pot on his head, and dragging behind him another which is attached to his waist by a string. Four women (right) jeer at him: a stout bawd with upraised arms and three more fashionably dressed younger women. The Duke, who wears his star and sailor's trousers, says, "Why what a rout is here about a damn'd crack'd Bum-boat! B--t the Jordan I wish it was at the bottom of the deepest Jakes in England". A dog barks at him, a flock of sheep (left) flee in terror towards their drover. c.November 1791
