re two general plansin use: One is to dump all the materials and suppliesbought into the operating or manufacturing accounts atthe time that they are purchased, and the other is to keepseparate accounts of materials and supplies, charging intooperation or manufacturing, as the case may be, only those items that are actually consumed. * * * * Very slight consideration of the question shows that thelatter plan is the correct one, but there is involved in it,first, the need of a well-devised system for the purpose, andsecond, a certain amount of clerical work for maintainingit. A proper view of this question is to be obtained only inthe light of a broad generalization upon accounting prin-ciples. The value of the quantity of materials or supplieson hand at anv time is essentially an asset. That which isconsumed in the operation of the road is an expense. Thatwhich remains on hand is something that would go intothe balance sheet statement among the resources, while STREET RAiLWAY JOURNAL.
