^oclaimed kingunder the title of Kamehameha IV. This kingmarried the chiefess Emma Rooke, a granddaugh-ter of John Young, the Englishman who figuredso prominently in Kamehameha the Firsts con-quest, and who married a Hawaiian woman. Thereign of Kamehameha lY., which lasted until hisdeath, November 30, 1863, was comparativelyuneventful. In 1857 the fort at Honolulu wasdemolished by order of the government, as that atLahaina had been in 1854. The same year JohnYoung (Koni Ana) died. He had been kiiliina nid(premier) since 1845. In 1859 the civil code waspublished, and in 1860 legal steps were takento establish houses of prostitution, the law tomitigate, etc., becoming a law. Kamehameha lY. died November 30, 1863, inhis thirtieth year, and his elder brother Lot be-came ruler as Kamehameha Y.
