Michelino da Besozzo, also known as Michelino da Besozzetto or Michelino Molinari, was an Italian painter and illuminator who lived in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. He worked mainly in Milan and is best known for his work as a manuscript illuminator. Michelino was born around 1370 in Besozzo, a town near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. He probably trained in Lombardy, possibly in Milan itself, which was a major artistic centre at the time. His most famous work is the illumination of the manuscript "Codex de Medicina" (also known as "Codex Atlanticus"), which was commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti, in the early 15th century. This manuscript contains a compilation of medical texts and is notable for its richly decorated pages with intricate borders, initials and miniature illustrations. Michelino's style is characterised by delicate and detailed ornamentation, with elements influenced by the International Gothic style popular in northern Italy during the late Middle Ages. His illuminations are often characterised by vibrant colours, elaborate designs and meticulous attention to detail. Although Michelino is best known for his work as an illuminator, he may also have produced panel paintings, although none are definitely attributed to him. He probably continued to work in Milan until his death around 1455.
