le. Louise Benjamin cantlet a bright breezy day in the countrygo by without putting some washingon the line, while Alice Dlinn,a really expert painter, plumber andelectrician, is so busy at home withsuch matters that someone else doesthe laundry, she says with a sigh ofrelief. One thing that has helped to make thisone of the most exciting music seasonshere in many years is a new organiza-tion called the Little Orchestra, whoseyoung conductor, Thomas Seher-man, is the son of a Journal editor,Bernardine Miielty (Mrs. HarryScherman). His programs and per-formances are of such quality that theStanding Room Only sign is up at everyconcert; and, so far as we know, hesthe only conductor in the country whowears a flower in his buttonhole whileconducting—a white carnation. Says hewears it for luck, and even though alot of people have complained that itisnt the thing to do, he intends to keepright on wearing it.
