This monstrance is covered also with jewels ofgreat value which almost conceal it, the gifts of royal personages.The fine Gothic silver-gilt cross must also be mentioned, knownat Toledo by the name of Giiion de Mendoza ; it was borne beforethe great Cardinal Mendoza, and was the first cross placed on thehighest point of the Alhambra Torre de la Vela on the day of theconquest, 2nd January, 1492. The following woodcut represents a processional cross ofSpanish work of the beginning of the 15th century, in the SouthKensington Museum, No. 5i4-73. It is of wood covered withplates of silver-gilt re^iousse work. On one side is a rood with theVirgin and St. John. Over the figure of Christ is the wordInri. At the extremities angels in high relief bear the emblemsof the Passion.
