While at Carlton House, Franklin went six milesto visit a Cree encampment. The chiefs tent had beenarranged for the occasion, fresh grass was spread onthe ground, and buffalo robes were placed oppositethe door to sit on; and a kettle was on the fire to cookmeat. The chief, an old man, welcomed him with ahearty shake of the hand and the customary salutationof Wliat cheer?
