The bright-eyed gneiss of Death Canyon, Grand Teton National Park, 2015.
Summary
This unique rock is called 'bright-eyed gneiss'. The pupils of the 'eyes' are dark crystals of iron-rich magnetite. Where they grow they take up the iron atoms nearby, leaving behind a white halo where other dark-colored iron-rich crystals cannot form.
