Summary
Photo date unknown. Pictured: Thaddeus Stevens, born April 4, 1792 in Danville, Vermont. Most famous as a Congressman and abolitionist, he is also important to the story of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. He was appointed Canal Commissioner in 1838, so had control over the entire Main Line Canal, including the portage. He was also very active in helping runaway slaves using the Underground Railroad.
