Share certificate of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company, printed on vellum, issued July 25, 1823. One of only three privately owned founders' shares of the world's first railroad company to use a locomotive powered by steam. Since no steam locomotive was available at the time of the company's founding, the vignette still depicts transportation by horse-drawn railroad.
