Frobisher made three voyages to present-day Arctic Canada, from 1576 to 1578, originally to discover the North­West Passage. This aim quickly transformed into rash speculation when some ore he brought back was thought to contain gold. It was later proved worthless, and one of the expeditions’ backers was bankrupted as a result. Although Frobisher did not find the Passage or gold, he did discover Frobisher Bay south of Baffin Island.
