Significance: Saugatuck is representative of the T2-SE-A1 tanker class, which became the workhorse for the U.S. Navy during World War II. There were 481 tankers constructed in this category under the U.S. Maritime Commission's Emergency Program between 1942 and 1945. These auxiliaries serviced the fleets engaged around the globe.
