Summary
Dark blue and white double jacquard coverlet with 2 trade blocks, dated 1852. Bottom border is grapevine while side borders are large flowers. Top is hemmed. Bottom has self-fringe, approx. 4 1/2". Field pattern has tiles alternating with floral medallions.; Born in Pennsylvania in 1801, Samuel Stinger was one of Indiana's best coverlet weavers. His coverlets are so well woven that they have stood up to the ravages of time and usage with hardly any wear. After weaving for a time in Ohio, he settled in Germantown, Indiana, in 1831 to begin his trade. His coverlets feature rich dark dyes and weaving so fine that the coverlets have a felt-like feel. Stinger favored the grape and vine border so much it is as much a trademark as his star signature block.
