Summary

A treasure trove of almost 12,000 detailed engravings, The Complete Encyclopedia of Illustration is a marvel of a collection culled from the worlds of science, history, geography, mythology, art, architecture, and more. Fully referenced, this volume is both an inspiration and a practical sourcebook for designers and artists. It also serves as a visual feast for admirers and collectors of old engravings, and stands as a tribute to the mid-nineteenth century artisans who created the original plates on which this book is based. This book was originally in German with the title 'Bilder atlas zum conversations lexicon.'

Iconographic Encyclopedia Of Science Literature And Art 1851 Volume 1, 2 by Heck, J. G. (Johann Georg) & Baird, Spencer Fullerton

Renaissance representation of classical ruins was a symbol of antiquity, enlightenment, and lost knowledge. Ruins spoke to the passage of time. The greatest subject for ruin artists was the overgrown and crumbling Classical Rome remains. Forum and the Colosseum, Pantheon, and the Appian Way. Initially, art representations of Rome were realistic, but soon the imagination of artists took flight. Roman ruins were scattered around the city, but frustrated artists began placing them in more pleasing arrangements. Capriccio was a style of imaginary scenes of buildings and ruins.
