He became known primarily as an Art Nouveau artist for his ex-libris and illustrations for the magazine Pan, among others. After an apprenticeship as a painter and gilder with his father in Landshut, he studied at the Munich Art Academy and settled in Munich as a freelance artist. A variety of illustrations, ex-libris, posters and works for the Reichsdruckerei took him to Strasbourg (école des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg) and Berlin, among other places. Among other things, he also designed the typeface "Nibelungenschrift" in 1897, which was used for his monumental work "Die Nibelungen" (The Nibelungs), which Germany showed at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Only 200 copies of this were printed. In 1917, Sattler was appointed professor in Strasbourg. He is considered one of the leading pioneers of Art Nouveau. He was a member of the artists' association Cercle de Saint-Léonard.
