Bending the right knee and thetrunk obliquely forward to the right, lowerthe arms and clasp the right thigh tightly.Then rise to position with arms sideward.Repeat to the left, then to the right. Carrythis work on continuously, alternating themovement to right with one to left until themovement has been executed several timesto each side. Breathe naturally while doingso. At first thought the movement shown inFigure Number Eighteen may appear to bevery decidedly a resting* exercise. Thereis nothing violent about the exertion itself,though at first the shoulders may catch it.Grasping either end of a folded towel withthe hands, arms down in front, swing thetowel over the head, bring the arms downwith the hands behind the thighs. The reader whowishes an additional exercise for straighten-ing the shoulders will find that he has it inthis movement. Moreover, this movement,performed a sufficient number of times, makesthe student feel uncomfortable if he triesto slump his shoulders forward immediatelythereafter. It will soon be discovered that all three ofthe last offered movements have a strongeffect in securing upright carriage. If thetruth of this be not at once, apparent, asregards the movements shown in FiguresNumber Sixteen and Seventeen, the resultswill none the less soon be discovered.
