Peter Bey, Cloyne and District Historical Society
Summary
This photo is of Peter Bey, one of the four sons of the legendary Johnny Bey. (Research has shown that there are at least 3 spellings of the surname - Bey, Bay, and Baye. ..An article in the Oxen and the Axe quotes the family as saying that the name should be spelled "Bay", but since the gold mine which Johnny discovered was called the Bey Mine, the writers at that time chose to stay with that version. We have followed suit,) The Beys had arrived in the area from the St Regis reserve near Cornwall and settled on the lower Mazinaw in the area of the Levere Road. Not much is known of Pete, except that he shared the family's skills at hunting and fishing, and was a policeman in one of the larger US cities - perhaps Cleveland or Detroit. With his wife, Kate, he owned property and a house at the former Snider Depot. . .From the Oxen and the Axe, and an interview with John Schwager of Trenton, nephew of Peter Bey...Unknown date of photograph.
