t was the tenth of December beforethe engineers could build their bridgesand in the meantime ill-feeling hadarisen between Burnside and the Gov-ernment. The fatal delay had en-abled Lee to concentrate his army onMaryes Heights, overlooking Fred-ericksburg. The work of buildingfive bridges across the Rappahannockwas begun under a drawn musketryfire from the opposite bank of theriver. Nearly every blow of a ham-mer cost a human life. Burnsideordered his artillerymen to open fireon the city. Fredericksburg becamea mass of ruins. This photographshows abutments of the destroyedbridge. The trees are cropped shortby the artillery fire from the Unionguns. The Confederate sharpshoot-ers were concealed in the buildings onthe opposite river front. Burnsideordered his men to cross the river ona line of pontoon boats. The sharp-shooters were driven from their shel-ter while the bridge building wascompleted. The river was crossed.At dawn, the twelfth of September,both armies stood ready for combat.
