Summary

Portrait of Japanese writer Noguchi Yonejiro (Yone Noguchi) by photographer Kimura Ihei, taken in Japan between 1936 and 1941.

Ihei Kimura was a Japanese photographer born on 1 December 1901 in Tokyo, Japan. He is best known for his black and white photographs of everyday life in mid-20th century Japan. Kimura began his career as a photographer in the 1920s and his work was heavily influenced by the work of European photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson. Kimura's photographs often depicted the working class people of Tokyo, including street vendors, labourers and children. He was particularly interested in capturing the energy and movement of the city, and many of his images show people in motion. Kimura's photographs were also notable for their use of light and shadow, which helped to create a sense of depth and texture in his images. In 1957 Kimura won the prestigious Photographer of the Year award in Japan and his work was exhibited internationally. He continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1974, leaving a legacy of powerful images that continue to inspire photographers today.
