Summary
Common name: Nasturtium Origin: South America Uses: An annual that can trail or climb. Very easy to grow and it self-seeds. A wide range of colors available. On Alcatraz, the colors are orange or yellow. Young leaves, flowers and unripe seeds are edible. In 1924, the California Spring Blossom and Wild Flower Association contributed seeds in an attempt to beautify the Island after the Army succumbed to internal and public disapproval of the Island’s appearance.
