Summary

This image depicts Mr Herbert John Lamble (centre) inspecting a snow plough for Mount Kosciusko. Herbert Lamble was Manager of Hotel Kosciusko from 1916 to 1922 and was Director of the New South Wales Government Tourist Bureau during the 1930s. He, along with the Honourable Frank Augustus Chaffey, Colonial Secretary, inspected the plough prior to its departure for Kosciusko. The plough was purchased by the NSW Tourist Bureau to ease the passage to Hotel Kosciusko during the winter months. ..On 19 July 1934, the 'Portland Guardian' reported that the plough: 'will enable passengers and goods to be conveyed to the chalet at Charlotte Pass, and to Kosciusko, the snow plough transported a load of Shell fuel oil, which is used for operating the lighting and heating plants at the Hotel Kosciusko.'..This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. ..The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection.
