Moonrise over American bison, Wind Cave National Park, 2015.
Summary
American bison (Bison bison) are also called American buffalo. These large animals once roamed North American grasslands in massive herds. Probably not surprisingly, they went nearly extinct in the 19th century due to commercial hunting, slaughter and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle brought over by immigrants. The population has made a recent comeback thanks to national parks and reserves.
