This species is found in the western Pacific Ocean from the Ryukyu and Ogasawara Islands to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. It inhabits coastal and seawards reefs and lagoons to a depth of 35 m.
Generally nocturnal, small groups of this fish are often seen resting out in the open during the day. A carnivore, it feeds on benthic invertebrates in open sand flats and seagrass beds at night.
At Palau, it aggregates to spawn around the new moon, with distinct pairing during breeding.
