three marabouts, variousbirds of prey, and many other animals, all of whichwere gratefully accepted by the different zoologicalgardens. The soldiers of our escort were draftedinto the Garua Company, and many of our boys found employment in the town; only a very fewaccompanied us to the coast. My best servant, whohad taken part in all my hunting expeditions, andwith whom I had not once had occasion to find fault, unfortunately died of dysentery at Garua. At last we were ready to start, and we set off intwo steel boats down the Benue River, as far as Yola. All the inhabitants of Garua came to see us off, thou-sands of people lining the banks as our boats slowlygot under way. Our former boys and bearersfollowed us for some distance, shouting: Good-bye, Massa ! We waved our final adieus, and thenbegan to shoot down stream, homeward-bound. Onthe 5th of July Yola came in sight. Mr Hoist, theagent of the Niger Company, received us, and kindlyplaced at our disposal the little steamer Yola. 161
