THE NOBLEST IN THE WOOD. 21 slowly, perhaps, but none the less surely. In some localities there is anapparent decrease, but in other parts of the state there is an overbalancingincrease. That there is a general increase I am convinced. The. law prohibiting the killing of cow moose and calves, and clausesprotecting bull moose, deer and caribou will, doubtless tend to materiallyincrease the game, and consequently add to the great annual revenuereceived from the sportsmen who come here from other states. The reports of sportsmen returning from the forests with trophies oftheir valor and skill, especially if it be their first successful trip, are lessto be relied upon than the battle-scarred veterans who have made theirhomes in the forests for many years, subsisting largely upon the flesh ofbear, moose and other animals killed by them frequently after a long chaseand hard fight; and their stories differ materially. The old veterans claim, and truthfully, that a moose cannot be killedeasil
