Letter from Samuel Joseph May, Brooklyn, [Connecticut], to William Lloyd Garrison, Brooklyn, [Connecticut]

description

Summary

Samuel Joseph May writes to William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for sending "the present of 50 copies" of his Discourse and encouraging him to visit Brooklyn sometime during the month. He then discusses his new paper, the Christian Monitor and Common People's Adviser, describing its purpose "to enlighten the common people so far as we may be able on all subjects connected with their best interests as moral and immortal beings." This includes such topics as "doctrines of Theology" as well as "Education, Temperance, Peace, and the Abolition of Slavery". May then comments on the [Benjamin Watkins] "Leigh's defence of slavery" that appeared in the Liberator of April 7, 1832 (Vol. II, no. 14) telling Garrison he "acted wisely in publishing it .. Let your readers see all that the most zealous slaveholders can say in behalf of slavery." He then asks Garrison to purchase and ship to him the same paper that he uses for the Liberator for use in May's paper. In the postscript, May clarifies that he will accept any amount of paper as long as it is more than 5 and less than 25 bundles.
