Oswald Sickert was a Danish artist who was born on 29 February 1828 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of a German painter, Johann Wilhelm Sickert, and a Danish mother, Frederikke Sophie Christiansen. Oswald Sickert studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was trained in the classical tradition of painting. Sickert later moved to Munich, Germany, where he studied with the famous German painter Karl von Piloty. He also spent time in Italy, where he was inspired by the works of the Renaissance masters. Sickert's paintings were mainly historical and biblical scenes, often with dramatic lighting and vivid colours. In addition to painting, Sickert was also an accomplished draughtsman and etcher. He produced numerous drawings and etchings, many of which were published in books and magazines. Sickert was also a respected art critic and wrote articles for several art magazines. Sickert died on 22 May 1885 in Munich. His works are in museums and private collections around the world, including the National Gallery in Denmark and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
