corrected by editors: wherevor remains, the reader must remember that itsretention is a matter of judgment. I have to express my obligation to Professor Selssfor his kindness in revising the proofs, and for manyvaluable suggestions. The Memoir prefixed will, it is hoped, proveinteresting. viii translators preface. PREFACE TO FOURTH EDITION. In this edition some corrections have been made. The Portrait prefixed is from a photograph of anoil-painting in the possession of Grafe and Unzer, booksellers, of Konigsberg. It is inferior, as a workof art, to the portrait engraved in the former edition ;but as it represents Kant in the vigour of his age, and, unlike the former, has never appeared in anybook, readers will probably be pleased with the sub-stitution. I possess also a copy of a rare full-lengthsilhouette, photographic copies of which can besupplied. My notes are in square brackets. PREFACE TO FIITH EDITION. I HAVE added to this edition a reproduction of thesilhouette above mentioned.
