The Virgin stands on the right, her left handpressed to her bosom, and listens to the message of the Angel,who. with open wings, kneels in front of her, to the Left, Insrighl hand raised in salutation. To the right of the Virgin area bed hung with Looped-up drapery and a prie-dieu on winchis an open hook. Above, the Dove, emblem of the Holy Ghost.In the background is a balustraded open window through whichare seen a street and a church. Height, .*( inches; width, .5S inches. 113—Sixteenth Century Italian Terra-cotta Bas-relief (By ^ Giovanni Bologna: 1.52.5-1608) — Jj ^Lsu^yir^^^ y- Rectangular shape. A subject, in uncolored terra-cotta, of the Miracle of St. Xicola of Bari. A brick wall in section dividesthe bas-relief into two unequal portions. On the right is shownthe interior of a poverty-stricken room, whose occupants, threewomen and a man, are seated on rough bases in attitudes expres-sive of their hunger and exhaustion. At the rear is a bed, at theside of which a young girl sits, leaning her shoulders againstit as though for support. To the left a bearded man rests hishead on one hand. On the left of the wall is shown a streetwith the saint, dressed in a tight-fitting tunic and a flowingmantle, who throws into the room, through an open aperturein the wall, small round loaves of bread.
