u have the weather to attend to. Tobe sure, you have a clerk to help you inthat, but he is not always to be dependedupon; there is a great deal of work in thedepartment. The seasons have a way ofrunning into each other, and gettingmixed, if you dont keep a sharp lookouton them; and the months are a trouble-some, unruly set. Then you must be care-ful how to turn on wet and dry weather;your reputation depends in a great meas-ure on that. But you must not expect tosatisfy everybody, for that is impossible. If you try to please the farmers the citypeople will complain; and if you devoteyourself to the cities, the country peoplewill call you all manner of names. I hadrather devote myself to apples and thatsort of a thing; everybody speaks of me asa great apple year; a glorious year forgrapes! and so on. That is very gratify-ing to me. And one thing I want you todo very carefully; that is, to watch theleaves that are turned. I thought Autumn attended to that sortof thing, said his companion.
