out 80,000,000years old. At that time, Kansas, now in themidst of the continent, was submerged undera shallow sea, somewhat like the Mediter-ranean, swarming with giant sea-lizards, hugemarine turtles, and great and small fishesof many kinds. In the first alcove to the right, a wall-chartillustrates the stream of fish life in geologicsequence, 500,000,000 years of fishes. It givesat a glance the basic arrangement of thespecimens shown, notable among which areOstracoderms from the Silurian and Devon-ian, the giant Portheus, and the saw-finnedProtosphyreena from the Cretaceous of Kan-sas. FOSSIL REPTILES The dinosaurs, the largest of the fossil rep-tiles, form the most spectacular part of theMuseums paleontologic exhibits. The moreprimitive reptiles and also those of such othergroups as the fossil alligators and turtles arealso well represented in the Museums collec-tions. They are displayed in a series of hallson the fourth floor of the Museum as de-scribed on the following pages. C39J
