Frederick Sandys - The Boy Martyr
Summary
This image illustrated a poem of the same title, by Walter Thornbury, in which a young Christian martyr living in the time of Nero successfully defeats a powerful opponent. Because the Christian refuses to relinquish his faith, Emperor Nero orders the lions to be released into the arena. The Christian is killed but goes to paradise. (see references) Another print is in the National Gallery of Canada.
