Summary

Theatrical poster for the film Exodus.

Saul Bass (1920–1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker best known for creating the iconic title sequences for such films as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Psycho, as well as The Man with the Golden Arm and Anatomy of a Murder. He also designed logos and posters for companies such as AT&T, United Airlines and Quaker Oats. His innovative use of simple shapes, bold colours and typography revolutionised the field of graphic design and influenced generations of designers. Born in the Bronx, New York City, Bass studied at the Art Students League and Brooklyn College before beginning his graphic design career in the 1940s. He worked for several advertising agencies before starting his own design firm in the 1950s. Bass's approach to design was strongly influenced by the modernist movement, which emphasised simplicity, functionality and the use of new materials and technologies. He believed that design should communicate a message clearly and efficiently, without unnecessary embellishment or complexity. In addition to his work in film and advertising, Bass designed book covers, album covers and even a postage stamp. He was a prolific artist and continued to work well into his later years, creating designs for clients such as the Academy Awards and the Girl Scouts of America. Bass received numerous awards and honours throughout his career, including an Academy Award for his short film "Why Man Creates" and induction into the Art Directors Hall of Fame. He is remembered as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, whose work continues to inspire and inform contemporary design practice.
