The gritty surface referred to is obtained by scientificallycombining broken stone of varying sizes mixed with bitumen,and from the very nature of its parts it is difficult to conceivehow it can be other than one of remarkable durability. The deeper de-pression is said to have been due to the sharp slant in thecrown of the street at this intersection. The track construction in many respects is similar tothat used by Arthur L. Plimpton, civil engineer of the BostonElevated Railway Company, in and around Boston. As indi-cated in the accompanying diagram, it will be noted that the jjarticles being used to fill the spaces between the largerstones. The proportions of the materials used are first carefullydetermined by physical tests with a view to obtaining thesmallest possible percentage of voids or air spaces In themineral aggregate, the character and shape of the stone vary-ing in each particular case.
