ELECTRIC RAILWAY REVIEW 441 INCREASED FACILITIES FOR FUNERAL CAR SERVICEIN CHICAGO. The funeral car service which the Metropolitan WestSide Elevated Railway Company, of Chicago, started in .June,1905, and which was described in the Street Railway Review At first it was thought that elevators would have to beprovided for raising the casket from the street to the elevatedplatfonn. and two stations were thus equipped, but since thattime many funerals have been easily handled from stationsnot provided with elevators and the necessity for ;)rovidingthem is not api)arent. When the fimeral is a large one andof July 15, 1905, i)age 447, has steadily increased in po))ularity calls for more than the funeral efjuipnient readily available.

Chicago Funeral Cars—Exterior of Metropolitan Car. until at the present time six cars are equipped for this serv-ice. When the first car was put into service it was with agood deal of doubt as to Its ever becoming generally used;but from time to time it has been found necessary to increasethe equipment adapted to this class of service. In the firstcar equipped portieres were put across one end of the car andthe casket taken in through an extra wide window which was regular motor cars are stripped of their advertising signsand attached to the funeral train. Under the present arrange-ments funerals are handled from any station reached by theMetropolitan trains and taken to practically any cemeteryon the system or on the Aurora Elgin & Chicago Railroad.the usual time being two hours for a round trip. Nearly allthe funerals are handled by one crew especially chosen for
